Naperville, IL – 08 February 2012 - Recent publications indicate recognition that ASHRAE Standard 188P, Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems, is moving steadily toward final approval. Already the proposed Standard has been published twice in public review format. The second publication of the Standard appeared in a public review that closed July 25, 2011. Final approval of the Standard is anticipated in 2012.
Health Facilities Management, a publication of the American Hospital Association, reports on the latest trends in hospital construction and renovations. The editors maintain close working relationships with facilities managers, consultants, equipment suppliers and industry leading architectural (ACHA), engineering (ASHE) environmental services (AHE) and interior design (AAHID) organizations. An informative review published in their February 2012 issue encourages its members to get prepared for implementation of ASHRAE Standard 188:http://www.hfmmagazine.com/hfmmagazine_app/jsp/articledisplay.jsp?dcrpath=HFMMAGAZINE/Article/data/02FEB2012/0212HFM_FEA_CodesStandards&domain=HFMMAGAZINE
The Journal AWWA, published by the American Water Works Association, released an article in January 2012 (Volume 104:1, pg. 52-56 downloadable from http://apps.awwa.org/WaterLibrary/showabstract.aspx?an=JAW_0075209 that references the ASHRAE public review publication. Quoting from the article regarding ASHRAE Standard 188P: "...good examples of what may be a new expectation for preventing human pathogen infection for all commercial water systems. The purpose of this specific standard is to present practices for the prevention of legionellosis associated with a building’s water system. This is a standard to provide a method for hazard analysis and critical control point risk management for human-occupied buildings and could be useful in monitoring and managing multiple waterborne threats including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi". The Journal AWWA article provides a great deal of perspective on the problem and it argues that the process specified in Standard 188 is useful for prevention of disease from all waterborne pathogens, not just disease caused by Legionella bacteria.
